On 6 March 2008, when all eyes in HK were set on the new Court of Appeal case law which successfully challenged the matrimonial 1/3 rule and brought up the threshold to a matrimonial 1/2 rule, the sense of unfairness in my case consumed me.
As if God has heard, I bumped into this legal contemporary of mine, whom I knew from 7 years back, and of whom I knew suffered through the death of his toddler’s balcony accident at that time. After his hearing some of my woes on my matrimonial saga which commenced with the infamous ”non-molestation order” some 18 months back, he said the following to me : ”Susanna, you know what?”. “I divorced some 2 years back.” “I was left with HK$13.84.” he said.
“Oh, you were still married when we met.” I said and then paused.
“And why did you give her so much?” I asked.
“I wanted to.” said he. “And you know what? It felt great, we didn’t even need to go to the lawyers.”
To that, I did not know what to say. And indeed, what more could I have had to say either about him, me or anything else? At the end of the day, I just felt blessed that I got Maddy.
That night, I hugged Maddy to sleep in a tight embrace and felt very blessed. God, thanks for sending me this important messenger. Everyone has a glass, which could be full as well as empty as they chose to look at it. Thanks alot and thanks again.
